How to Add a New Door to an Existing Interior Wall

Many remodel jobs require adding a door to an existing interior wall. Many homeowners choose to enclose their garage and turn it into a gameroom or den. Moving the new room’s door to a living area from the laundry room completely changes the look. Most homeowners can add a door to a non load-bearing interior wall without calling a professional.

Instructions

1

Layout the new door’s location. Look at both sides of the wall. Avoid placing the new door next to the electrical panel or any plumbing fixtures.

2

Layout the new door on one side of the interior wall using the door pack’s measurements. A door pack includes the door, the door frame and the trim. The measurements are found on the door pack’s packaging. Use a bubble level and pencil to trace the outline on the drywall.

3

Cut through the drywall with a utility knife along the outlines. Try to remove the drywall in one piece. If there is a hidden problem, like unmovable wires or plumbing pipes, then replace the drywall.

4

Poke a hole at each corner of the cutout through the second interior wall. Layout the door onn the second wall using the holes in the corners as a guide. Remove the drywall.

5

Move any plumbing or electrical wire in the way. This may require a professional, depending on the scope of work required and the ability of the homeowner.

6

Cut the wall studs and floor plate with a Sawzall. Cut the wall studs 1 1/2-inches above the door opening, this requires cutting through the drywall whre the stud is. Often it is easiest to cut through the floor plate first then cut the top of the wall stud.

7

Frame the opening with 2 X 4 wood studs. The header must extend completely across the top of the opening. Install the header first then toenail the sides into the new header and the floor plates.

8

Secure the drywall on both sides of the wall to the new wall studs and header. Place a nail every 12 inches.

9

Slide the half of the door pack with the hinges into the opening. Use a bubble level and shims to adjust the door until it is plumb and level. Secure the door frame to the wall’s framing using the manufacturer’s instructions. Often leaving the door on the hinges helps keep the door frame square.

10

Install the second half of the door pack. Sometimes this half is just a trim package that nails to the wall’s frame.

11

Sand the door and frame. Paint the door and frame with primer then the finish paint.
